Budding learner

Anika is SO SO enjoying school.

We had her first parent-teacher conference last week, and her teacher said she was a joy to have in class, always curious about learning and infectiously excited about nearly every activity; she apparently is one of the best in the class at following directions and listening (say WHAT?!) and is a good friend to all her classmates. She's tied in her class for counting up to the highest number (right now she's at 49) and each night she practices as she's lying in bed, getting to 103 most nights (with a bit of prompting in the 50s and 60s and 70s).

And I'm enjoying how much she loves to draw and write and copy letters - either ones you write or ones you dictate to her. She's beginning to sound out letters and tell you what letter a word starts with. She MUST, absolutely MUST, draw. All the time. Before school, after school, at 8:45 p.m. as a bedtime stalling tactic, at 6:15 when she gets up in the morning….this kid is an artist, through and through. Her art teacher commented that Anika's interest and hand-eye coordination are advanced for her age group.

I just love to see her so enthused. Of course, she's enthused about everything, but after the multiple moves this summer and a tumultuous year overall, it's absolutely heartwarming to see her happy, bouncing, precocious self.

Here is a picture she drew last week and her own description:

(Clearly, a mama and baby giraffe eating lunch from tall green trees :-)

She told me what she wanted to say and I dictated the letters.

And here is a picture she drew the other day for her brother. It's Hulk and Spider Man:
