Why Reni Won't Walk

My son can take up to 20 steps, only slightly Frankenstein-like, when he thinks no one is looking. He will walk between things, walk back and forth like a general in front of his toy shelf, and walk to get to the piano.

He will not, however, walk as a mode of primary transportation, despite the fact that his balance is now near-perfect and his feet have grown by leaps and bounds this summer. Although we can only guess what's going on inside that adorable increasingly blondish-covered football-shaped head of his, here are some of my observations as to what I think he's thinking:

- It's safer to crawl. No one can push me down and bang my head on the sidewalk or the floor.

- It's nicer to crawl. Why the heck would I bother with this walking thing anyway? It's oh-so-much-better to be carried around when I'm done with this floor thing.

- It's faster to crawl. If I put my head down and go-go-go, I can *almost* catch up with Anika.

- It's more fun to crawl. I can be more sneaky and get into more stuff if I crawl. Also, peek-a-boo really only works when I can peer around a corner all sly-like, and that just isn't possible when I'm walking and can't maneuver the way I want to.

- Yes, I am aware of how silly I look when I am trying to carry a piece of food and crawl at the same time. And after eating, if I sneak away before mama cleans my hands and face, I can really coat the floor in yogurt in a hurry. So I realize it may be nicer for mama if I walk soon. But really, what's the hurry? I like to take my time. (Except when it's time to eat. Then, you'd better have food in both of my hands and on my tray or I may scream like a pterodactyl.)
