The lovely Lyssa came all the way from Spokane, WA to meet Anika and sit around and do nothing but drink tea and good wine and talk as the current wintry mix blows around the windows and sidewalks. It has been a fabulous few days and even Anika is getting in on the fun, having all sorts of conversations (if you count eyebrow furrows and expressive eyes as communicative tools) about sports and life and generally just staring at this new person and new voice in the household. She is more aware every day, and actually fought to stay awake last night so that she could be with the grown-ups and hang out and gossip with us around the dining room table.
While Lyssa runs data sets for her dissertation and works remotely for her employer, we chat about how much has changed over the past year or two. I remember when your closet was mostly power suits and high heels, she said. It's nice to see you more relaxed. Goodbye rat race, I said. Hello, rugrat, she said. This struck me as a good blog title, altho since Lu is right here with me I think I'll stop being rude and move away from the computer so that we can chat some more. I'm sad that she's leaving tomorrow morning. I know Anika is going to miss her. They've had some great conversations.
