Mathematician, misunderstood

I overheard a conversation on the drive to school today. "My friends don't believe me on stuff," I heard Reni tell his sister, earnestly. He was telling her more, but between the music and the a/c I couldn't hear him very well. Turning down the dials, I looked in the rear view mirror and asked for clarification. "My friends aren't old enough to understand," he explained.

When I asked what that meant, he said, very matter-of-factly, "They don't believe me when I tell them that google is a number." He didn't sound upset or sad or left out. He honestly said, when they get older, "they will understand. But just not now."

We had an interesting discussion on what powers of 10 mean and how many zeros, exactly, google has. We also talked about how google was a search engine, and what that means.

My prediction: I am not equipped to answer this kid's questions past the age of seven.
