Happy Halloween from this super clan!
The kids had so much fun walking (who am I kidding, they ran and ran and ran) around the neighborhood, and Roman was absolutely incredulous that people were handing him candy. He gets so used to people telling him what to do, telling him where to go, strapping him in the carseat with half an English muffin as his lunch and wondering what surprise destination he's going to this time (is it the doctor's office where I'm forced to wait quietly? the bank, where I'm forced to wait quietly? school, where I'm forced to say goodbye to my siblings and can't even go inside? the supermarket, where we can't just sit and eat and play with packaging? maybe, just maybe, the park, where just when I find my groove it's time to go home?), taking things from him that he can't have (credit cards, cords, nutella jar, marbles, sharpies, toys that older brother doesn't want to share) that you could just see the magic happen in his face. First, apprehension at a strange adult approaching him with a smile. Then, realization they're giving him something. What? Candy? And I can put it in my bag? And carry my own bag? OMG never ever stop, Halloween.
This morning, when leaving for school, Roman turned around at the top of the stairs and ran to get the easter basket we used as a Halloween candy bag last night. He looked at me, hands firmly gripping the handle, and smiled. "Walk! Yummy!" he said.
Waiting until next year's gonna be hard.
