Merry Christmas and Sayonara, 2013!

Somehow another Christmas has come and gone, and half the world has already rung in the new year. Here in the Morillo household, I'm still struggling to understand how Reni manages to wake up at 5:15 a.m. every morning like clockwork. Anika does too, about half the time, but I can usually get her to go back to sleep. I'm subsisting on a large amount of coffee and trying to recall that fuzzy six months or so when Reni used to wake up at 4 a.m. and feel a bit less sorry for myself now that he's 'sleeping in.'

Not that I'm complaining, but I fail to understand how he is all sunshine and run-around-the-house 7 hours before dawn at the absolute darkest, coldest time of the year. Sometimes parenthood just really doesn't make sense.

We had a lazy Christmas just the four of us, lounging around in pj's most of the day, and I took a walk with Reni and enjoyed the gorgeous turquoise sky and the general quiet of the day. The kids had very different gift-opening modus operandi, with Ani ripping through each gift with the speed and agility of a Nascar driver while Reni focused on the first toy he opened (or, rather, that Anika ripped open for him as he patiently tore off a few pieces of wrapping paper). It's been fun helping them play with their new toys and read their new books over the past week or so, and we have been trying to impart the general ethos of the holiday - giving, thankfulness, sharing, and loving - with mixed success. The kids and I both miss preschool and are counting down the days until January 7, when they resume their normal schedule.

Mostly, we are just tired. Well, I'm tired, and they are wired. It's like the line from the children's book, Olivia, where the mom character, exasperated, says, "Olivia, you really wear me out, but I love you anyway."

Happy 2014, everyone! May the new year bring you much happiness, success, and "love anyway."
