Dear Anika,
Today is our first Mother's Day together. Last year, we were in Italy and you were this miraculous, nausea-inducing little concept that we called "Jomando" or simply our bun in the oven. You still had lots of developing to do then, as you do now, but today we get to watch you as you grow and learn and explore, and we love you even more today than we did back then.
You are an absolute joy - your smiles, your giggles, your cooing and the way you sing yourself to sleep all amaze and amuse me. Your personality is pure sweetheart, with a healthy sense of humor and a side of precocious curiosity that wants to observe and then give it a try yourself. You've got quite an independent streak, and you're as smart as you are cute: you know when I'm about to give you something you are asking for, and you smile at me as if to say, thanks for listening. If you don't get what you want, you give it a few minutes and then you let us know that you are NOT happy with the current arrangement, thank you very much. You are also learning how to do things like play music on one of your toys, or turn the pages of a book, or pick up what you're reaching for, or roll over, or grab at your feet and your perfect little toes. When you accomplish this, you are quite proud of yourself.
Everyone who meets you comments on your beauty and your calm, observant nature. You give out spontaneous smiles and giggles as gifts to those you meet, and I have no doubt that these gifts are ones you'll continue to give to others as you grow.
My wish for you this Mother's day is that you continue to develop into your own wonderful, beautiful person and that you know this day and always how much you are loved.
As my own mom still says to me, loveyoualwaysandforever.
